Summer Rec Program: We're bringing back long-lost favorites like kick-ball, friendship bracelets, swimming, arts & crafts, sports, and field games! Every day at camp is a new adventure and with field trips and camp themes in the mix, this summer vacation will be anything but ordinary! At camp, we strive to create a fun and friendly atmosphere where kids are excited to learn and grow! Camp counselors are certified in CPR & First Aid and have been chosen based on their excellent leadership qualities, enthusiasm and positive attitudes! From first-timers to seasoned campers, our Summer Rec program has something for EVERYONE! Open to grades 1-5, 7:45-5PM. Click here to download registration and details. Newport Sprint Triathlon: June 29th at Prouty Beach. 1/2 Mile Swim, 13 mile bike, and a 3.1 mile run. Race in and along the shores of the Lake Memphremagog in Newport, VT in the first annual Newport Sprint Triathlon. The race start at Prouty Beach with a swim in Lake Memphremagog transitioning along the bike path leading to the bike portion of the race. The bike portion climbs out of town with a few “classic New England rolling hills” with views of the lake and into Canada. The course loops by the Canadian border before returning back downhill into town for transition to the run. The run is a fairly flat and fast loop around town before finishing back along the shores of Lake Memphremagog. The Newport Sprint Triathlon is sponsored by the Newport Recreation Department with a portion of the proceeds to support the Mary Wright Halo Foundation.

Summer Concert Series: Three weekends this summer there will be concerts in the Municipal Building parking lot, where bands will play to the downtown diners and shoppers. Concerts begin June 21 with ETA playing at 6pm. Future concerts are scheduled for July 19th and August 2nd. These concerts are free and BYOB. We encourage you to bring a picnic and some chairs and enjoy from the parking lot with spectacular views of Memphremagog and of all the action on Main Street.
Learn to Sail Camps & Lessons: The water has warmed up and the wind has been nice and steady meaning that its time to get out on the water and learn to sail. We are offering 3 sailing camps for all ages and abilities, and private lessons for anyone interested. In 2 days we can teach you how to rig a boat and sail on your own. Once you have demonstrated those skills, you will be awarded with your very own sailing card giving you the opportunity to rent one of our sailboats on your own time. Sailing camps will take place for youth 8-12 on June 22 & 23, for adults 18+ on July 13 & 14, and for juniors 13-17 on July 27 & 28. Private lessons are available any time by making an appointment by calling 334-7951.
Swimming Lessons: July 22 to August 2 at Prouty Beach at 1pm. Young and less young can learn to swim in the mystic waters of Memphremagog through the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program for $25/person. Lobsterfest: The Newport Parks & Recreation Department is resurrecting their annual fund raiser by boiling lobsters and mussels at the docks for an evening of great food and dancing to the sweet tunes of "Don't Call Betty" on August 2nd. Dinner will be served at 6pm and dancing will begin at 7pm. For more information or to get tickets please call the Newport Parks & Recreation Department at 334-6345. Lobster dinners are $30, Chicken dinners are $25, or if you're coming just for the music the cost is $10.
Friday Fun Nights: It's a family affair! Join us once a month for high-energy activities and shows perfect for all ages! Kids, teens AND adults will love spending time together watching hilarious magic shows, playing laser tag or glow-in-the-dark capture the flag, and even watching outdoor movies under the stars! Some activities are geared toward participants age 10+, but kids of all ages are welcome to join with parental supervision. Pr-registration is required. Tennis Camps I & II: Legendary tennis instructor Gary Achinson is back for another season of teaching tennis at the Prouty Beach Tennis Courts. These camps designed for all abilities are geared towards kids ages 8-14. Camp I is June 17-21 and Camp II is June 24-28. Sign up for one week or both, the choice is yours. Newport City Residents fee is $30 for 1 week or $50 for both. Non-residents fee is $45 for 1 week or $75 for both weeks. Registration forms are available here. Half Price Camping at Prouty Beach: Once again we are offering half priced camping at Prouty Beach for Newport City residents August 30-September 1, and for Orleans & Essex County September 6-8. Call to reserve a site at (802) 334-7951.
Kingdom Aquafest: Starting July 4th and contiunuing until July 7th centered around Memphremagog through its many access points throughout Newport. Visit the webiste at www.kingdomaquafest.com for a list of events and schedules of what to do.
Independence Celebration: 4th of July in Gardner Park. The schedule is being tweaked and set and the bands are warming up. The fireworks are being tested and tried for perfection and the weather man has agreed to hold off any rain so that we can have a spectacular day of celebrating our independence on July 4th starting at 12pm and going until after the fireworks at 9:45. Summer Track & Field: Join the Newport Parks & Recreation Department's summer track team and compete in two meets in July. The program begins on June 18 with practices every Tuesday and Thursday at 9am at the North Country High School Track. There are two meets, the Hershey Meet in Essex on July 6th and the VRPA State Track Meet in St. Johnsbury on July 20th. Participation is $25/athelete. Open to boys and girls ages 7-15. Recreation Committee Meetings: The Newport Recreation Committee hosts meeting once a month to discuss upcoming events, department policy, long and short term goals and more at their informally formal meetings in the Newport Municipal Building. The meetings are typically scheduled for the first Monday of each month at 5:30pm. but they sometimes vary for various reasons. The meetings are open to anyone , but to become a member, one must be a Newport resident. Call 334-6345 for more information.
Scholarships Available: Many programs offered by the Newport Parks & Recreation Department can have the fees reduced or waived due to the need of participants. Feel free to visit our "registration forms" page for a scholarship application or call 334-6345 for more information.
