Autumn is a special time in the Northeast Kingdom, and what better way to celebrate turning of the leaves than with an old-fashioned festival. Downtown Newport's fall events are hosted in collaboration with several community organizations. including Parks & Recreation, the North Country Chamber of Commerce and several local vendors and organizations. The weekend includes:
-A photo contest display at the Parklet -Scarecrow contest displayed throughout the city -Farmers market at Gardner Park -A concert by the Newport Area Volunteer Band at the municipal parklet 11-12:15am -DJ in the parklet starting at 12:30 -A classic car show down main street 11am-2pm -Quilters Guild quilt show in the municipal gym -Join the 80th anniversary celebration of the Orleans County Natural Resources District from 11-2pm Click here for more info -And of course, the Chilifest contest that will warm your inner leaf peeper! 11am-2pm Parks & Recreation Fall Photo Contest
Submit your photos of landscapes, fall scenes, foliage and radiant leaves! Entries will be displayed on Main Street in Newport during the Fall Foliage Festival on Saturday September 27th with open voting for "People's Choice Award" until 2pm. Ribbons will be awarded in multiple categories based on clarity, composition, emotional impact, and quality of subject. Categories are "Home Sweet Home," "Living Color," and "Vermont Made." Parks & Recreation Scarecrow Contest
Hosted by Newport Parks & Recreation, local residents and businesses are invited to participate in an area-wide Scarecrow Contest! This year we have a new addition to the scarecrow contest. Anybody is welcome to join in and build/set up their scarecrow in the Parklet next to the municipal building for display. Scarecrows can be brought fully assembled and set up in the parklet OR you can assemble it on location. If you decide to assemble on location it will need to be built and ready for judging at 1pm. Every Scarecrow must have their name displayed and an entry form filled out. All Scarecrows can be on display for the weekend and need to be removed by the end of the following week. The winners in each category will win a gift card of their choice to either Pick and Shovel or Newport Village Market. These whimsical scarecrows will be judged on Saturday, September 26th. Vermont's North Country Chamber brings to the table the tastiest part of the Fall Festival...CHILIFEST! This fun, family-friendly event boasts great chili, live entertainment and something for all "tastes." Cooking chili is an art and with over a dozen competing businesses and individuals, visitors are sure to find something they like! Tasting begins at 11am on Main street near the Emory Hebard State Building. Tasting "spoons" given by the chamber, are $5 each with competition and voting closing at 2PM. Winners for the "People's Choice Award," will be awarded at 2:30PM in front of the State Building! Contest Rules & Registration Form
Farmers Market
The Newport Farmer's Market is located next to the band stand in Gardner Park and features a variety of fresh farm produce and products. On any given day, you can find a diverse collection of Vermont Made products including jams and jellies, American Girl doll clothes, natural soaps and lotions, caricatures, relishes, maple syrup and muchmore! The farm stand opens each May and runs 9AM-2PM, every Wednesday and Saturday. |
