Pumpkins in Pomerleau Park!

We're lighting up Newport with Jack o' lanterns this year and we need YOUR HELP! Submit your own pumpkin carved at home OR join the Newport Recreation Committee for a community carve event on October 25th to design over 200 pumpkins for the park! All pumpkins at the carving event will be entered into the the carving contest and kept for display at Pomerleau Park (across from Dominos with the lighthouse) on October 29-31st.

The community carving event on October 25th will be held in the Newport Municipal Gym and parking log from 9AM-2PM. This is a socially distanced event with masks required when indoors. Tools will be provided and 6-10inch pumpkins available by donation (or you can bring your own pumpkin to carve).

CARVING CONTEST RULES

TO ENSURE FRESHNESS & STABILITY, DO NOT CARVE PUMPKINS MORE THAN 10 DAYS IN ADVANCE OF THE CONTEST!*

1. Limit three entries per person. Pumpkins must be received at the Newport Municipal Building lobby between Sunday October 25th - Wednesday, October 28th. Building is open 7:30AM-7PM. All entries must include an entry form or note with: Participant's name, age, business/organization (if applicable), name of pumpkin and email address (to be notified for winning).

2. Stenciled pumpkins are OK. Pumpkins may be carved, sculpted, painted, airbrushed or decorated. All decorations must be fastened very securely. Entries must be free-standing or attached to a piece of plywood or foam core so they can be easily transported and displayed.

3. Providing your own votive is appreciated, but not required. No “flame” candles allowed. Colored lights are OK.

4. All entries must be family friendly. Scary designs are fine, but please do not incorporate any political, violent or suggestive elements - these displays will not be accepted.

5. Adults are welcome to help children, particularly to ensure safety, but in the spirit of the contest, please ensure the entry is primarily done by the child.

6. Each entry will be given a number. Judges will not be privy to any contestant information including the carver's name. Decisions made by judges are final. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes will be awarded for each age category. First place prize is $100, second place is $50 and third place is $25 provided by Communty National Bank. All prizes will be awarded in Downtown Dollars (certificates that can be used like cash at over 25 Newport businesses). Additional prizes will be awarded for a business/organization category, $100 for People's Choice (online voting via Facebook), $100 for Best in Show. Winners may also receive trophies or ribbons.

7. By entering into the contest, contestants give authorization to use photos of the pumpkin/contestants and names of the contestants for use on our website, social media and news through media outlets.

8. Although "Pumpkins in Pomerleau Park" will have periodic overnight security, we cannot guarantee that pumpkins won't be damaged, lost or stolen while on display.

9. Pumpkins must be picked up by Sunday, November 1st at Pomerleau Park by 8PM. Any pumpkins not retrieved will be composted.
