Newport's Aquafest
It's summertime in the Northeast Kingdom, and our lake is life here in Newport. What better way to celebrate beautiful Lake Memphremagog than with the one and only Aquafest! Weekend events are hosted in collaboration with several community organizations for a robust line-up including the famous Kingdom Swim, a grand parade on Main Street, live music, street dance, corn hole tournament and much more!
11th Annual Kingdom Swim
Lake Memphremagog is a mecca for open water swimmers and this is the flagship swim for Kingdom Games. Distances includes 25km Border Buster, 10 mile, 10km, 5km, and 1 mile swims for all ages, plus a 1/4 mile and 100 yard course just for kids. Competitions begin at 5:30AM and run through the day at Prouty Beach culminating with a 4:30PM award ceremony. Come celebrate the heart of summer in the heart of the Kingdom! The Newport Farmer's Market is located next to the band stand in Gardner Park and features a variety of fresh farm produce and products. On any given day, you can find a diverse collection of Vermont Made products including jams and jellies, American Girl doll clothes, natural soaps and lotions, caricatures, relishes, maple syrup and much more! What does the word "BLUE" mean to you? A feeling, the sky, the water, Bluegrass Music, Blue Humor, blue jeans, bleu cheese... or your favorite artwork. Experience total immersion into BLUE by joining the Memphremagog Arts Collaborative for their latest exhibit, free and open to the public in the "Downstairs Connection "at the Mac Center on Main Street. Works in several disciplines will be shown, all of which represent a personal interpretation of the color blue, which we are surrounded. Experience the blue of the painter, the weaver, the jeweler, the potter and photographer. Feel the BLUE HUE come over YOU! Show your support for our nations veterans by wearing patriotic gear and waving those USA flags high as 300 Combat Veterans rumble up the Derby Road on their ride from the Newport American Legion to the Derby Community Church. The procession begins at 10:00AM and will be followed by a ceremony at the Derby Veterans Memorial Park to honor the service and sacrifice of our nation's veterans. The Combat Veteran's Motorcycle Association and the Derby Community Church invites veterans and their families for lunch and to enjoy live music from Stars, Stripes, and Strings and special guest Mark Shelton. Life on Lake Memphremagog is something to celebrate! The Aquafest parade features over 30 floats including live music, animals, elaborate costumed carnival dancers and special this year - African Drumming performed by Jeh Kulu! Businesses, clubs and organizations are encouraged to celebrate the lake by marching, riding or driving in the parade. Parade line-up begins at 11:30AM at Gardner Memorial Park, with step-off at 1:00PM. The parade travels from Gardner Park, along the Causeway and Main Street to the Newport Municipal Building. Cornhole is a great activity that brings people together in the spirit of friendly competition! Rally your team and come on down to Gardner Memorial Park to join a tournament that supports your local fire department. Tournament starts at 3:00PM with 2 two person teams (limited to 40 teams total). Cost to enter is $40.00 per team but the top team will walk away with a $200.00 cash prize and a trophy! As the day's festivities wind down, there's nothing like gathering with friends or a date-night with a loved one dancing under the clear, Vermont starry sky. The Newport Recreation Committee is hosting the 2nd annual street dance to benefit the Gardner Park Playground & Splash Pad Project. With live music by local favorite Last Kid Picked and beverages provided by the Warehouse, it is sure to be a good time! This event is open to guests 18 years and older (valid photo ID required at the door). Gate opens at 7:00PM, $12 advance tickets or $20 per person at the gate.
