![]() Spanning 31 miles and crossing the U.S.-Canada border, Lake Memphremagog is Vermont’s second-largest lake and a federally designated navigable waterway, akin to Lake Champlain and the Great Lakes. Its name comes from the Abenaki word "Memrahabegek", meaning “where there is a big expanse of water,” an apt description for a lake known for its vast size, fjord-like shoreline, and rich history.
Boaters will discover Memphremagog as a hidden gem, offering days of uninterrupted exploration. Towering glacial mountains like Owl’s Head, Elephantis, and Hog’s Back create a dramatic cruising experience, while predominant northeasterly winds make for exceptional sailing. The lake’s 21 islands include registered old-growth forests and hidden caves once used by Prohibition-era smugglers. Its depth reaches 351 feet in Canada opposite Jewett Point, with the lakebed dropping sharply north of Mont Owl’s Head before rising again near Gibraltar Point. Newport, at the southern end, provides a quiet, welcoming harbor, while Magog, Quebec, offers a lively contrast with vibrant nightlife and renowned French Canadian dining. The Canadian side also boasts some of Quebec’s most valuable waterfront real estate, with celebrities like Madonna and Sylvester Stallone rumored to own homes along its shores. Memphremagog has even served as a filming location for Disappearances starring Kris Kristofferson and Super Troopers 2. Newport City Dock connects boaters to this exceptional waterway with seasonal and transient slips, three mooring fields, a public launch, a courtesy dock, fuel, pump-out services, restrooms, picnic areas, and bike path access. Slips accommodate boats up to 36 feet and offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, private bathrooms, showers, and optional power and water. Our large pier, finger docks, and mooring fields can host up to 80 boats, with many slip holders calling their vessels home for the season. Non-motorized boaters enjoy dedicated canoe and kayak storage, free parking, and easy water access. Open from late May through Columbus Day, the City Dock is staffed daily (weather permitting) to assist boaters and ensure a seamless experience. Home to the nearly 100-year-old Memphremagog Yacht Club and the U.S. Customs checkpoint for international travelers, Newport City Dock is the perfect base for exploring Lake Memphremagog and beyond. Whether you're a local adventurer or visiting from Canada, we look forward to welcoming you! |
